Building New Habit
Floss Fairy Project
Application, Dec 2021, 4 mo, Figma
The objective of this project was to design an interface experience to help someone change their relationship with a habit. I selected flossing as my design problem because I also struggle with maintaining a flossing habit. I did research on the subject, then created a survey and posted it on different social platforms. Fortunately, I got a decent amount of responses. From their answers and comments, I studied reasons and frustrations from people who floss regularly to people who have never flossed. One of my discoveries was that people who first learnt about flossing with family tend to have more experience and floss more regularly. It seems like family habits and early education impact children. Hence, I decided to target helping young kids at ages 5-11 to build a better relationship with flossing. My project name is based on the common children's belief of the existence of tooth fairy. I designed a happy path and prototype for this intervention.
Solutions
Process & Explorations
Revising this project led me to think deeper about my target audience and user flow. I changed a color palette to be more gender neutral and fun, keeping who my target users are in mind. I also switched out all my original typefaces to rounder and chubby GT Maru which consist of some very energetic emojis, perfect for this project and my new icons. Rethinking about how much children of that age range would have access to technology, I redesigned my onboarding flow to have their parents first set up for them. My app also allows users to compete with their friends, a way I found from research to encourage and influence each other. My goal is that they can have a fun and meaningful experience while learning and building a healthy habit of flossing. I added fun facts on my flossing screens so users can learn something everyday. I also looked at different children apps in the market to find out what’s appealing to kids and what would encourage them to learn. I added a reward function, big cute icons, and animations. I learned that it is most important to understand my audience before design.
